Sneaky Creekans - Opening for The Huxtables and IBOPA
I came into the show at the Catalyst expecting a shorter version of the
Sneaky Creekan show they put on last week at Palookaville. With only 45
minutes to work with, it would have to be a bunch of songs clumped
together in a vain attempt to show all the first time viewers what they
are all about. Mission Impossible in most cases, but the Creekans seemed
up to the task..
The Creekans donned their orange jumpsuits and were ready to rock the house.
They went right to work with up beat ska songs like "Topsy Turvy", and "20". The
fast pace and intro hooks invoked a few of the people in front to dance
including this guy in a red warm-up suit that was break-dancing right
next to me. Sometimes he'd get so close that I'd feel the wind of his
legs flying by in a circle. Along with their usual cast and crew, they
had two stage dancers Rob and Kevin who often became highlights of the
show; one of ‘em even did a flip during "Hardcore 180". Most of the songs
they played were pretty straight ska but they had a few where you could
see some rock and metal influences coming through.
The band had a few obstacles to overcome later in the show when both the
guitarists broke a string on different songs. However, they recovered
nicely on one account by playing a quick cover (the theme song to the
show Heathcliff) and then breaking out into a metal riff complete with a
double bass drum beat that was slayer-esk. Oh yes…
All in all, a pretty phat show.
