Freality Band Review:

Thursday, Jan 6th Catalyst- Santa Cruz. Ohms, Burlacticus Undertow, Sneaky Creekans, Robotgod. The First band, Robotgod is a girl-fronted band consisting of a talented sing in pigtails (Violet Lieby) who posesses a very melodic, captivating voive, more stage prescense then Courtney Love, and a talented band to back her up. The show culminated in all the band members banging out a beat on a bass drum and the crowd chanting along with "Kill Yourself". Overall, a very impressive performance for a young band.

The 8 member second band, Sneaky Creekans took the stage wearing orange jumpsuits and incooperating DMX, Das Efx, NWA, Guns and Roses, Metallica, Limp Bizcut and even the theme from 90210, not bad for a ska band. Nate Lieby Belted out lyrics from behind the drum set, while two dancers, a couple of sax players, a couple of guitarists, and a bass player grooved to some of the best music I have heard out of a local band since San Jose based band, "Insolence". To label this music as ska wouldn't be dooing justice to this talented cast. The crowd consisted of many followers but gained many more, including this reviewer, at one point, band members entered the small pit area, with instruments, to dance with the crowd. Overall, I would have to say that the fusion of styles that the Sneaky Creekans play is addicting, by the end of the set everyone watching was wearing a smile and watching intently. Lieby, who is the brother of the singer from Robotgod, said the band would hopefully be releasing their first album in a few weeks. I hope to hear more from the first two bands in the future. The third band was an attempt to mix 70's music with surf. Burlacticus Undertow did have an attractive go-go dancer, but when they took the stage there was about 250 people in front of the stage and by the end of the second song, everyone including this reviewer had walked out. I do genuinely apologize to Ohms for getting stuck behind Burlacticus, but sometimes that is the drawback for headlining. The first two bands made the evening worthwile.
